Cilest is a combined contraceptive pill, and it contains artificial versions of female hormones oestrogen and progesterone (these are hormones that are produced naturally in your ovaries). Want to know how pills work – read more here.

You need to take the pill at around the same time every day for it to be effective (and therefore take additional precautions if you vomit, have diarrhoea or miss a pill). Each pill has the same amount of hormones in it – you take the pill for 21 days and then during the ‘off’ days, (when you don’t take the pill), you’ll have a bleed.

The combined contraceptive is not suitable for all women (e.g. they don’t recommend it for women over 35, or if you’re taking certain medicines), so it is important your talk to your doctor (which is what we always recommend, whatever the method!).

Key facts about Cilest

  • The pill is 99% effective, only when it is taken correctly (which is usually the tricky part)
  • The pill works by preventing the release of an egg each month (so there’s nothing for any sperm to fertilise)
  • It is possible to take the pills back to back (and not have the break)
  • With this method, It is advised to talk to your doctor if you’ve just given birth or are breastfeeding.
  • Some antibiotics may affect the effectiveness of the combined pill – always read the label of your medication and ask your doctor (there’s more info here on that topic)
  • Each tablet contains two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and norgestimate (these are the artificial versions of oestrogen & progesterone)
